2013 has seen the city of Derry being awarded the status as one of the top 10 cities in the World to visit this year. As a small city with only 83,700 in population, Derry fought off some key contenders to secure 'destination number four' in the Lonely Planet’s travel bible of places of interest to visit in 2013. The auspicious accolade comes just months after Derry successfully won the bid to become the UK’s City of Culture 2013 and assures a year-long programme of internationally recognised events to boost tourism in the area.

As a leading local signs and graphics provider in the area, Signs Express (Derry) was delighted to be involved in promoting Londonderry as a contender for the 2013 City of Culture, enhancing local interest in the bid by printing and installing banners around the city.

As the announcement of the finalists neared, Signs Express (Derry) also used their sign making skills to make polystyrene photo props of the word 'YES' to place around the city and attract interest and enthusiasm from local residents.

Signs Express (Derry) was also commissioned to provide column banners and flags for free standing flag poles along with a raft of other signs and graphics to help promote the 2013 events, in preparation for the launch of the events programme on 20th January.

In August this year, Londonderry is hosting the Fleadh, which is a large event expecting to attract 400,000 visitors to the city, and Signs Express (Derry) is already involved in installing promotional signs around the city for the event.

Richard McGonigle, managing director of Signs Express (Derry) commented, “2013 is going to be a very exciting time for Derry and we are delighted that our fine city has been granted such valuable recognition from The Lonely Planet. The signs we have already completed have attracted lots of interest and attention. We can't wait to continue to promote the amazing events that will be taking place throughout the year and make sure that people realise just why our city deserves a place in the top 10 and is the UK’s City of Culture.”

In 2013 Derry will be celebrating its 400th anniversary of its famous city walls and also hosting the Turner Prize, both of which assisted in it securing a top 10 spot in the guide. The 10 finalists for the Lonely Planet guide were: 1) San Francisco, 2) Amsterdam, 3) Hyderabad, 4) Derry, 5) Beijing, 6) Christchurch, 7) Hobart, 8) Montreal, 9) Addis Ababa - and finally -10) Puerto Iguazu.

Derry was beaten only by Hyderabad (number three), population 7.75 million; Amsterdam (number two), population 830,654, with the number one spot going to San Francisco, population 812, 826.

Signs Express (Derry) provides a full design, manufacture and fitting service for all forms of signs and graphics including interior and exterior signs, vehicle graphics, banners, exhibition displays and window graphics.
