Going Carbon Neutral in 2023
Signs Express are pleased to announce that we have been certified as a carbon-neutral business, having partnered with carbon offsetting organisation, Carbon Neutral Britain, progressing one small part of our wider environmental commitment.
In the UK, businesses contribute over 85% of the total GHG emissions accelerating climate change and we recognise our contribution towards this figure.
We have therefore chosen to offset our carbon footprint in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and associated emissions through funding carbon neutral projects around the world.
Part of our environmental commitment
In combination with offsetting our carbon footprint, we are taking several other measures to reduce our impact and play our part to protect the environment now and in years to come:
Zero Waste to landfill
We proactively review, track, and assess our waste management practices ensuring we take necessary measures to prevent waste in the first instance; reduce, reuse or recycle waste; reduce and eliminate waste being sent to landfill; and as a minimum seek to recover energy from waste via incineration.
Continual improvement and focus on sustainability
We want to continuously improve the environmental impact of our activities, through seeking excellence in every area of our work and minimising our environmental impact by regularly reviewing our activities, policies and targets. This is an ongoing commitment upheld by every member of the Signs Express team.
Providing greener product alternatives with our eco-range
We are committed to educating and providing our customers with greener product alternatives; more eco-friendly in either how they are made, sourced and their recyclability at their end of life.
Environmental awareness and training internal teams
The empowerment of our employees is our strongest weapon in the battle for environmental protection and will therefore arrange for suitable training and awareness-building sessions to be made available where possible on the ecological implications of our work activities and the factors within our control. Across some of our sites, we encourage our teams to participate in UK-based eco projects that improve the local biodiversity from tree planting to habitat restoration.
The Projects
To calculate our total carbon footprint, operational data was collated from our headquarters and across our nation-wide network of Signs Express centres.
Most of our corporate emissions originate from fuels used and energy consumption in our centres and our owned/leased vehicles to deliver signs and graphics to business all over the UK, which we are now offsetting by funding projects that remove and prevent further CO2e emissions, including:
Energy Efficient Lighting in India
Improved Biodiversity & Mixed Rainforestation in Costa Rica
South West Australia Reforestation
Reforestation on Degraded Land in Uruguay
What this means for our stakeholders
Our partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain has benefits for all our stakeholders. For our customers, choosing to work with Signs Express allows our them to tackle the environmental impact of their supply chain and reduce the carbon cost of their signs and graphics in comparison to buying from elsewhere.
For our staff and franchisees, it is helping to shine a light on the true cost of our operation and foster greater awareness around the issue and to keep it as a priority going forward.
For the environment, while not negating our corporate impact in its entirety, it is an important step in allowing us to give back to the planet and protect it against climate change.
