Back in 2017, we spotted a tweet from Montgomery Primary School asking for help with a sign for their new community garden. They’d teamed up with St Thomas Residents Association and Blooming St Thomas to create a space where children could learn about food and neighbours could muck in together.

Our approach
The plan was to design a sign that captured that feeling of community — friendly, colourful, and welcoming.
We came up with a bright design using simple wording and illustrations that made it clear the garden was open to everyone. The sign invited locals to join in and explained how the space would be used.
A few years later, the team behind the garden got in touch again. The place had grown, the activities had changed, and they needed a fresh sign to reflect what it had become. We happily supplied the new version free of charge — it felt right to keep supporting a project that means so much locally.
Challenges and solutions
Our Exeter team handled everything — design, production, and fitting. We used durable, weather-proof materials so the sign would last through the Devon weather and still look good years down the line. There weren’t big technical hurdles but getting the wording right mattered. The sign needed to explain what the garden was without sounding too formal — it had to sound like the people who ran it. We worked closely with the volunteers until every line felt true to their voice.
