From cathedrals to heritage buildings, creating signage solutions is all about balance. Being visible without overshadowing, informative without being intrusive and hardwearing without compromising on sustainability.
Here at Signs Express Liverpool & Wirral, we know what it takes to get that balance right.
We work closely with cultural institutions, event teams and local councils to deliver signage solutions that are sensitive to their surroundings while standing up to high profile events, busy footfall and changeable weather. Whether it's for a one-off public art installation or a weeks-long city celebration, our team is on hand to look after everything from design and production to speedy delivery.
Here's a closer look at how we support some of Liverpool's most recognisable venues.
Case Study: Barrier Scrim Event Signage for Liverpool Cathedral
Barrier Scrims for a Striking Interior
When Liverpool Cathedral hosted the stunning Helios by Luke Jerram, the team needed branded barrier scrims that would blend into the venue while still doing their job.
We supplied 40 cathedral signage barrier scrims printed on recyclable mesh PVC, maintaining visibility and airflow, with the strength and durability needed for high-traffic use.
The turnaround? Just two working days from sign-off to delivery, ready in time for a packed calendar of events.
These red scrims were both a professional and practical essential for the Cathedral's internal space, keeping visitors safe while reinforcing their brand.
A New Look for a Historic Space
We were pleased to support Liverpool Anglican Cathedral with a full refresh of their external signage, all part of a wider rebrand to bring the space up to date while staying true to its roots.
From welcome boards at the main entrance to wayfinding signs dotted around the grounds, every detail was designed to reflect the Cathedral’s identity without ever taking away from its architecture.
It’s a fine balance, making signage that stands out just enough to be useful, but not so much that it feels out of place. Our approach was all about clean, respectful design. Simple layouts, elegant fonts and colours that complement the stonework rather than clash with it.
Projects like this show how important thoughtful signage is in heritage spaces. It’s not just about pointing people in the right direction, it’s about enhancing the whole atmosphere while keeping the character of the place intact. Whether someone’s visiting for a service, an event or just passing through, those little visual cues make a big difference.
Case Study: Queensway Tunnel Monument - Storytelling Hoarding
We recently worked with Liverpool City Region and Merseytravel on a brilliant project for the restoration of the Queensway Tunnel Monument.
Our team created bespoke branded hoarding that did more than just section off the site. It sparked curiosity. It told the story of the monument’s restoration. And it helped passers-by feel part of something positive happening in the city.
Our designs were clean, bold and informative, turning what could’ve been a dull building site into a space that actually caught people’s attention.
It’s a solid example of how even temporary signage can pack a punch. Whether it’s for safety, branding or public engagement, hoarding boards like these can completely shift how a project is perceived while the work’s going on behind the scenes.
What Makes Heritage Signage Different?
Respect for surroundings: Designs must complement, not compete, with historic architecture.
Material choice matters: We often use recyclable or low-impact materials to meet sustainability goals.
Speed without shortcuts: Cultural events work to tight schedules, our in-house production keeps us agile.
Wayfinding meets branding: From cathedrals to museums, signage should guide and tell a visual story.
