Retail and business parks are packed with signs, all trying to turn heads. And for good reason, signage is one of the simplest, most effective ways to get your business noticed and bring in new customers.
From towering totems to sleek fascia signs, they come in all shapes and sizes, each with its own job to do. When done right, signage not only helps people find you, it builds trust and reinforces a professional image.
We take a look at the key types of signage your site might need, along with important factors like safety, materials and compliance.
Why Retail & Business Parks Need to Get Signage Right?
Signage does a lot more than point people in the right direction. It builds trust, strengthens your brand and makes busy retail or business parks easier to navigate for everyone, from first-time visitors to delivery drivers.
Get Found Fast: make it easy for customers, clients, and couriers to spot your business at a glance.
Guide the Way: clear directional signage smooths traffic flow, reduces congestion, and gets people to the right unit quickly, on foot or by car.
Stay Safe & Compliant: signage plays a key role in meeting health and safety regulations, including fire exits, speed limits and DDA compliance.
Branding: consistent, well-designed signage gives your business a professional edge and makes the site feel cohesive and well-managed.
Customer Experience: nobody wants to wander around feeling lost. Helpful signs make browsing stores easier and more enjoyable, especially for those first-timers.
Promote What’s New: use signage to highlight offers, new products or seasonal messages that catch attention and boost sales.
Communication: share key info like opening hours, directions or services at a glance, making life easier for your visitors.
Types Of Signage To Consider
Entrance & Totem Signs
These tall, freestanding signs are usually positioned right at the entrance of a retail or business park, and they do a lot of heavy lifting. They’re the first thing most people notice when they arrive, so it’s your chance to make a strong first impression.
With clear tenant listings, logos, and directional arrows, they let visitors know exactly where they are and who’s on site.
Think of them as your site's welcome mat, but much bigger, bolder, and more useful. They’re also a subtle way of saying, “This place is well-run and professional,” before a visitor has even stepped out of their car.
Post & Panel Signs
Clear and reliable, post and panel signs are ideal for guiding visitors, staff, and delivery drivers to the right spots. They’re perfect for marking entrances, zones, parking areas, and drop-off points, making navigation effortless and your whole park feel more put-together.
Fascia Signs for Units
Fascia signs are the face of each business within your site. Whether it’s bold and modern or more understated, every tenant needs a fascia that speaks their brand’s language.
And while each unit may have its own style, keeping things consistent in size and layout across the site helps everything look sharp, organised, and professional. It’s all about striking that balance between individuality and unity.

Wayfinding & Directional Signs
In a busy retail or business park, it can be easy to get lost, especially if it’s your first time. Wayfinding signs are your site’s sat nav, helping visitors get where they need to go without a second guess.
Think arrows, colour-coded areas, maps, and clear numbering systems. Whether people arrive on foot or by car, these signs take the stress out of navigating unfamiliar surroundings, and make your whole site feel more welcoming.
Health & Safety Signage
It’s not the most glamorous signage on site, but it might be the most important. Health and safety signs are essential for compliance, are often a legal requirement and plays a crucial role in keeping staff, visitors and contractors safe.
Fire exits, speed limits, loading zones, and DDA-compliant wayfinding aren’t optional, they’re vital. Get them right, and you’re not just ticking boxes—you’re showing that safety matters across your whole operation.
Temporary Or Promotional Signs
Got a special event, seasonal offer or a new store opening? Temporary signage is your go-to for grabbing attention fast. From A-boards and flags to vinyl banners and window posters, these signs are quick to put up, easy to change, and brilliant for short-term buzz.
They’re a low-commitment way to make a big impression, perfect for marketing without the long-term lock-in.
Case Study: Large-Scale Retail Park Signage at Bromborough Croft
We recently completed a large-scale exterior signage installation for PureGym & Nile Wilson Gymnastics at Bromborough Croft Retail Park in Wirral.
The project involved fitting four Flex Face illuminated signage systems, each measuring over 8 metres wide and 6 metres tall, creating a bold, highly visible presence across the site.
Delivered over two days, our full team of five managed every aspect of the installation, including aluminium composite tray signs and four exterior fascia signs, ensuring consistency and durability across the development.
We’ll be returning to site to complete the final stage of the project, fitting two black box skins to additional elevations once the building is fully occupied.
This project highlights how well-planned, large-format signage can anchor a retail park visually, helping major brands stand out while maintaining a cohesive, professional appearance.
Things To Think About for Effective Retail or Business Park Signage
Creating Brand Consistency Across Multiple Units
When you’ve got multiple businesses on one site, signage can quickly turn into a mismatched mess, unless you’ve got a plan. That’s where brand consistency comes in.
Setting shared guidelines for things like sign placement, materials, and sizing doesn’t stifle creativity, it actually makes the whole park look more professional, polished, and easy to navigate. You can still give each tenant space to shine, just without the visual clutter.
At Signs Express Liverpool & Wirral, we’ll work with you (and your tenants) to find a signage strategy that keeps things cohesive while letting each brand stay true to itself.
A consistent signage approach means:
✔ A clean, well-managed look from the moment visitors arrive
✔ Better wayfinding with familiar signage styles throughout the site
✔ A stronger brand presence across the whole retail or business park
Materials That Last
Outdoor signage doesn’t just need to look the part, it needs to stay looking the part. With the great British weather serving up everything from sideways rain to blazing sunshine, choosing the right materials isn’t optional, it’s essential.
We work with tough, tried-and-tested materials like aluminium composite, acrylic, and polycarbonate because they’re built to handle the elements without cracking, fading, or falling apart. Long-lasting signage isn’t just a smart aesthetic choice, it saves time, money, and hassle in the long run.
At Signs Express Liverpool & Wirral, we can recommend the best material options based on your site, budget and goals, so you get the most value from your signage investment.
Lighting Considerations
If your signage disappears at dusk, it’s time to light things up. Illuminated signage makes sure your site stays visible even when the sun doesn’t show up, and let’s face it, that’s more often than not.
Whether you’re after sleek backlit fascia signs, glowing post signs, or eye-catching 3D letters with built-in LEDs, there’s a lighting solution that’ll fit your space and make a lasting impression. It’s not just about looking good, it’s about helping your visitors spot you faster, even on the gloomiest of days.
Planning Permission & Compliance
Here’s the bit no one wants to get wrong, planning permission. Some signs, especially larger or illuminated ones, need planning approval or advertisement consent before installation. Skip this step and you risk costly delays or even having your signage removed.
While we don’t apply on your behalf, we do know what to look out for. We’re happy to offer advice and point you in the right direction. Our tip? Speak to your local planning authority early, it can take up to six weeks for approval, so it’s worth building this into your timeline from day one.
