OUR WORK
Signs of treasure at museums
After the success of the Vivienne Westwood exhibition, the team at Signs Express Sheffield were delighted to be asked back by the museum to create a full suite of display signage for the next major show – Treasures from the V&A: 400–1600 AD.

Project Overview
This was a truly special project. The collection, which includes sculptures, ceramics and metalwork spanning twelve centuries of European craftsmanship, made its only UK stop in Sheffield. For us, the work was far more than traditional sign making – it was about helping to shape the experience for visitors the moment they stepped inside.
Challenges and Solutions
Working to a very tight deadline, we produced and installed every piece of signage for the exhibition – from the large decorative wall panels right down to the smallest name plaques that sit inside the display cases next to priceless artefacts. Each element had to be perfect. In a setting like this, every shade, surface and texture plays a part in how the exhibits are seen.
Colour accuracy was crucial. Under museum lighting, the tones of the walls, the gold vinyl, and even the lettering on the information cards needed to blend seamlessly with the artefacts themselves. We worked directly from a small piece of antique fabric supplied by the curators, using it to guide our colour matching. From that, our team created the striking entrance panels, printing onto both opaque and translucent vinyl to achieve the depth and warmth the museum wanted.
As with the Vivienne Westwood exhibition, the project demanded precision and creativity in equal measure. It became more like set design than simple sign production – creating an atmosphere that enhances the art without overpowering it. Steve and Carol, who led the project, made sure every detail worked in harmony with the displays, spending extra time on-site to fine-tune finishes and positioning before the grand opening.
The Outcome
The end result is a rich, immersive space where history feels close enough to touch. It’s a project we’re incredibly proud of – one that highlights how craftsmanship in signage can bring storytelling, artistry, and design together.
