OUR WORK
The University of Southampton's 60th anniversary
When the University of Southampton hit its 60th year, they wanted something eye-catching for the celebrations. Something simple but bold enough to make people stop and notice. That’s when they called us at Signs Express (Southampton).

Our approach
The idea was a large freestanding “60” sculpture to sit on the lawn outside The Hartley Library. It needed to look impressive and still be safe around students and visitors walking by every day. Because it was only up for the event, we also had to make sure it could go in and come out easily without leaving a mark.
We built the piece out of aluminium – solid, neat, and sturdy but not too heavy. It was fitted to a secure plinth so it stayed put without needing any ground fixings. The finish caught the light really nicely, and when it went up, you could see it from right across campus.
Outcome
Students stopped to take photos, and staff told us it became a bit of a landmark during the anniversary week. It even ended up in the local paper and on TV, which was great to see.
Once the celebrations were over, our team went back to remove it. The job was clean, quick, and left the grass exactly as we found it. For us, it was one of those projects that might look straightforward, but every small detail mattered — and it all came together perfectly on the day.
