Creating Consistency Across NHS
Mears works closely with NHS hospitals across the UK, supporting busy, complex environments that need to remain operational throughout the day.
Although much of its work happens behind the scenes, it plays an important part in how these spaces function. Across multiple locations, consistent branding and clear wayfinding help create a more professional, considered experience for staff and visitors.
Over time, some of the existing graphics had become inconsistent, so the brief was clear: refresh the signage, strengthen Mears’ brand presence and create a more cohesive look across each site.
With several locations involved, the project also needed to be managed efficiently, with turnaround times, access requirements and overall value considered from the outset.

Working on site
Working within NHS environments always requires a bit of flexibility.
Access had to be planned carefully, around staff and patients - often outside of peak hours when footfall is lower. In some areas, installation windows were limited simply because certain spaces needed to remain operational.
There were also slight differences between sites, which meant the solution couldn’t be entirely one-size-fits-all. At the same time, the project still needed to remain cost-effective across the board.
Balancing all of that - without compromising on quality - tends to shape how the project comes together.
Delivering the solution
We worked closely with Mears from the start, beginning with a clear quotation and building the project from there.
Using their brief, we developed artwork that translated their brand into clean, practical visuals - designed to work in real environments. The focus stayed on clarity, consistency and ease of use.
Speed was also important. Artwork, production and installation were managed efficiently to keep turnaround times tight, but without rushing decisions where it mattered.
Alongside the design, we also considered how the signage would perform over time, how it would be installed, how it would wear, and how it would be cleaned. In healthcare environments, that last point tends to come up more than expected.
Materials used
For the graphics, we used MD5A vinyl with gloss lamination.
It gives a sharp, professional finish, but more importantly, it holds up well in high-traffic environments where signage is handled and cleaned regularly.
Artwork was produced in Adobe Illustrator, helping to keep everything consistent before moving into production.
Project delivery
From initial enquiry through to installation, the project was managed end-to-end.
This included:
Providing a clear and transparent quotation
Setting up and refining artwork in line with the client’s brief
Preparing production-ready files
Coordinating installation dates to suit each location
Some areas required more coordination than others, particularly where access was limited. Nothing unusual, but it did need factoring in as the schedule came together.
Final result
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Once installed, the overall look and feel of the spaces improved noticeably.
Branding became more consistent across sites, and the updated graphics created a cleaner, more professional environment. The improvements weren’t over the top, but they made a clear difference to how the spaces were experienced day to day.
That consistency was one of the main drivers behind the project in the first place, so it was good to see it come through in the final result.
Importantly, the signage was delivered on time, met expectations, and provided solid value for the investment made.
