Festive Installation at Scale

The Brief

Signs Express Preston was asked to design, produce and install a temporary Christmas window display on King Street in Manchester. The brief was to create a bold, festive activation using oversized props and a large backdrop, delivered within a very tight timeframe and installed entirely out of hours.

Our Solution

We developed the full concept from a rough reference image and managed the project from design through to installation. The finished display included a 10m x 4m printed backdrop banner and 16 oversized present props, built from lightweight but durable polystyrene.

Custom wrapping paper was printed in-house, with bespoke bows created using Metamark pop-up material to add depth and visual impact. A 3D visual was produced at the design stage to confirm layout and scale before production began.

Challenges

The installation took place on one of Manchester’s busiest streets during the Christmas Markets, with vehicle access restricted. Mobile scaffolding was brought through the building to allow installation from inside the space.

All works were completed out of hours across two phases, with production turned around in just four days. The interior was also an active construction site, requiring the display to fully conceal the environment and maintain a clean, professional finish throughout the install.

The Result

Despite the tight schedule and challenging site conditions, the project was delivered successfully and created a strong festive presence on King Street. The display transformed the space and achieved the client’s aim of a high-impact Christmas activation in a busy city-centre location.

Sustainability

The oversized presents are designed for reuse and long-term storage. At the end of their lifecycle, the polystyrene can be recycled via the University of Manchester EPS Recycling Centre, with wrapping materials recycled through standard paper and card recycling.
