OUR WORK
Harlow Renaissance & Council
As part of a major town-wide rebrand, Harlow Renaissance Ltd commissioned Signs Express (Harlow) to design, manufacture and install a series of striking information signs celebrating Harlow’s history and culture.
The aim was to create a visual journey through the town — one that connects modern Harlow with its deep historical roots and reminds visitors that it’s much more than a post-war “New Town.”

A Collaborative Project
This project was a true team effort. Working closely with local architect Alastair Howe, design agency Redwire.uk, Harlow Renaissance, and representatives from Harlow Council, we helped turn a shared vision into reality.
From early sketches to the final installation, every detail was carefully considered — from the materials and colours to the placement of each sign within the landscape. The goal was to make the signs both informative and visually engaging, while ensuring they would stand the test of time outdoors.
Our approach
The finished scheme includes 15 bespoke aluminium monoliths, each one featuring different historical information and imagery unique to its location. Every sign was:
- Digitally printed with high-resolution artwork capturing key stories and photographs
- Powder-coated in a colour specially matched to the project’s branding requirements
- Finished with protective coatings for long-term weather resistance and durability
Each piece combines modern manufacturing with timeless storytelling — connecting past and present through design.
The signs are now installed across Harlow, highlighting the places and people that have shaped the town’s identity.
Visitors can learn about Potter Street, which has been home to the pottery trade since Roman times, and Netteswellbury, a parish that traces its origins back to 1060. Mulberry Green, once a bustling stop on the 19th-century London-to-Norwich coaching route, also features proudly.
The signage trail also tells some of Harlow’s more unexpected stories — such as the two benches at Hamstel and Hodings Roads, rumoured to be meeting spots between an RAF officer-turned-Soviet spy and his KGB handler during the Cold War.
Modern landmarks are represented too: The Lawn, regarded as Britain’s first residential tower block, and The Stow, one of the UK’s earliest neighbourhood shopping centres, both have dedicated signs that celebrate their pioneering roles in British urban design.
The outcome
For our team at Signs Express (Harlow), this project was about more than manufacturing signage — it was about helping to shape the way people experience the town they live in. Each monolith stands as a piece of design, history and pride, contributing to a sense of place for residents and visitors alike.
By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern print and fabrication techniques, we created a set of installations that are as robust as they are beautiful — a fitting tribute to a town that has always looked forward while honouring its past.
