The Project
Visitors to the Glasgow Science Centre can now travel across galaxies without leaving their seats. The Planetarium, once an ageing theatre, has been completely refurbished into a state-of-the-art, full-dome digital experience - one of the most advanced in the UK.
As part of the transformation, Signs Express Glasgow were asked to design, manufacture and install a full suite of Bespoke Signage Solutions. It wasn’t just about putting up signs; it was about helping to create an atmosphere that matched the wonder of the cosmos.

The Challenge
This was a big job. The scope of work included:
- Five floor-to-ceiling banners, each standing 4.7m tall.
- Wall graphics and hoardings to extend the visual theme throughout the venue.
- A double-sided suspended lightbox, welcoming visitors in and seeing them off as they left.
- And the showpiece: a 28-metre illuminated wall, built from two vast lightboxes measuring 12m x 3m and 16m x 3m.
Planning started back in June 2015. From concept through to installation, every detail had to be thought through. The team spent months making sure the solution was bold, functional and long-lasting.

The Result
The finished Planetarium is breathtaking. The digital projection technology is impressive enough, but with the signage in place, the whole space feels complete - immersive, educational and inspiring in equal measure.
“We really enjoy working with the Science Centre because they push us by providing original and innovative designs. We always go the extra mile to make sure that we meet, if not exceed their expectations. It is also really rewarding to know that our hard work is resulting in the enjoyment of all the visitors to the Centre. I am extremely proud of all of my colleagues who have been involved in this project because we have utilised all of our extensive skills to complete it to the highest standard.” - Michael Kane, Project Manager

A Continuing Partnership
This wasn’t our first collaboration with the Science Centre. Previously, we worked on the Glasgow Tower, Scotland’s tallest free-standing building and the tallest fully rotating tower in the world. That project involved creating a 9-metre concave lightbox along with a range of other bespoke signage. Having delivered then, the Science Centre had confidence we could rise to the challenge again.

A Wider Impact
The significance of the new Planetarium was summed up by John Brown, Astronomer Royal for Scotland:
“The installation of the new digital system here at Glasgow Science Centre will help us to ignite curiosity and exceed the expectations of modern learners with inspirational, real-time content and state-of-the-art technology. It will be a fantastic resource for the people of Glasgow and beyond.”
