Overview
When the new Grand Central retail development opened above Birmingham New Street Station, it marked one of the city’s biggest regeneration projects. The £150 million centre, covering 450,000 sq. ft., transformed the old Palisades shopping centre into a modern hub for shopping and dining. With over 40 premium fashion and lifestyle stores, more than 20 restaurants, and the largest John Lewis outside London, Grand Central was designed to be a destination in its own right.

The Brief
To match the scale of the development, the project required high-profile exterior signage that would be instantly recognisable across the Birmingham skyline. Signs Express Birmingham SW were appointed to manage the specification and installation of the centrepiece roof signage, three large, illuminated signs, each spelling out GRAND CENTRAL.
Our Approach
Working in collaboration with contractors Simco and Network Rail, our team took responsibility for the main roof signage. This was no small task; it required 18 months of planning, coordination, and revision of architectural drawings to ensure the signage integrated seamlessly with the building’s structure.
The signs were designed to make an impact both day and night. Constructed from built-up brushed stainless-steel letters with welded rims holding acrylic faces, they were finished with day/night vinyl: appearing dark in daylight but glowing brightly when illuminated after dark. Each set of letters was mounted onto a bespoke galvanised framework with lifting eyes, allowing the huge structures to be craned into place securely.

Why It Matters
Projects like this show just how much difference signage can make. The Grand Central signs don’t simply name the building - they give it presence, helping turn it into a true Birmingham landmark. Being involved in something on this scale was a real privilege for our team at Signs Express Birmingham SW.
From our base in Bromsgrove, we’ve spent nearly a decade working with businesses of all shapes and sizes. Whether it’s a shopfront on the high street or a city-wide development like Grand Central, we approach every project with the same care, detail and pride in what we deliver.
The Result

In total, three signs were installed:
- Two measuring 16.5m wide by 1.75m tall
- One measuring 11m wide by 1.1m tall
The result has been these fantastic signs that can be seen by day or night from afar and herald a warm welcome to everyone out for a touch of retail therapy.
