EH Smith
When a company with a history as long and respected as EH Smith looks for a signage partner, it’s a huge compliment to be chosen. Established in Birmingham back in 1922, EH Smith has grown into one of the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchants, with branches right across the Midlands and South East.
Their team approached Signs Express (Birmingham SW) to help refresh and improve their signage across several sites — the aim being to make each location safer, clearer and easier to navigate for customers, suppliers, and delivery drivers alike.

The Brief
The first step was to spend time on site. EH Smith locations are always busy — with people walking between the sales counter and the yard, and vehicles constantly moving materials in and out. That means clear, well-placed signage is crucial, not just for branding but for safety too.
The client wanted something simple: signs that looked professional and consistent, while making the customer journey as smooth as possible.
They also wanted a way to showcase key product areas and highlight seasonal promotions, without overcomplicating the space.
Our Approach
Our team carried out a full site survey and mapped out every customer touchpoint — entrances, parking bays, loading zones, and the main trade counter. From there, we put together a signage plan that balanced function with good design.
We produced and installed large post-and-panel signs throughout the site to direct customers safely and display key information. These were paired with smaller directional and safety signs where needed.
Each piece was designed to carry the EH Smith colours and logo, ensuring a consistent look across all sites. The new signs were also positioned strategically to help drivers and visitors move around the busy yards more efficiently.
Materials used
Given the industrial nature of EH Smith’s sites, durability was a top priority. We used aluminium composite panels for strength and weather resistance, with high-performance printed vinyl graphics for long-term colour retention.
The signs were designed not only to look smart but to stand up to constant use and exposure — rain, sun, and everything in between.
The end result
The project was one of several we’ve completed for EH Smith as part of an ongoing relationship. Working with their team has always been straightforward — they value good communication and quality craftsmanship, which is exactly how we like to work.
The new signage has made a visible difference. Visitors can now find their way around more easily, and the branded panels give the sites a more cohesive, professional look.
